The city's name comes from the Irish word 'corcach' which translates to 'marshy place' this refers to the city's location on the River Lee. The river flows through Cork and the main portion of the city centre is formed upon an island in the river.
Cork's airport has been improved and this has made the city much more accessible for visitors and students alike. The city also offers a reliable public transport service via road, ferry and rail. There are tours available if you wish to obtain a better look at the city. The locals are called Corkonians and are renowned for their warmth and hospitality to visitors.
The city boasts numerous pubs, clubs and wine bars where you will discover a warm welcome awaiting you along with good food and drink. There are many beautiful buildings to observe in Cork including the wonderfully impressive Saint Finbarre's Cathederal with its stunning French gothic spires reaching up into the sky.
