The country of Ireland actually developed into an island not long after the last glacier period approximately 10,000 years ago. This has had an effect on the country's wildlife and plants because it has fewer animal and plant species than Britain or mainland Europe.

Ireland is known for its legends and mythical creatures such as the lucky leprechaun. The leprechaun is thought to be a male type of fairy and they live in four leaf clovers. If you are lucky enough to see one hold his gaze and he cannot escape, the minute you turn away he will vanish!
