Studying French in Montpellier
The city of Montpellier is situated on very hilly ground and is located 6 miles inland from the Mediterranean Sea. It is positioned on the banks of the River Lez. The main focal point of the city of Montpellier is Place de la Come?die this is located right at the heart of the city. It was built in the 18th century and now the square is completely pedestrianized with the Fontaine des Trois Graces positioned in the square's centre.
The fountain was sculpted by Etienne d'Antoine and is said to represent the 3 graces, these were considered to be the daughters of Zeus and Eurynome. The 3 daughters independently stood for different things beauty, mirth and good cheer.
Montpellier has many shopping centres including the Polygone centre which houses shops and stores to suit all requirements. There are numerous outdoor markets held throughout the city selling everything from fresh fruit to trinkets, Montpellier is well known for its English bookstores. The shops do tend to open later in the mornings, close for lunch and then generally stay open later into the evening.
