The carnival of Viareggio is well worth watching and has been operating since the year 1873. The initial parade was organized by some wealthy men who decided to arrange for a procession of floats adorned with gorgeous flowers to pass through Viareggio. To display their protest some of the locals decided to wear masks it was mainly to show that they were disgruntled at the carnival taking place when they were made to pay such high taxes.

Ever since then the Viareggio parade has witnessed floats adorned with people wearing Papier Ma?che? masks.

Viareggio is situated on the flooding plains of Versilia which is on the Ligurian Sea although it is traditionally considered to face the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Between the months of July and August the Festival Puccini takes place in Torre del Lago Puccini which is a town approximately 2 -3 miles outside of Viareggio. The festival has been running every year since the year 1930 and is held in an open air theatre containing 32,000 seats.
